The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
